PTSD Treatment with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): A Melbourne Psychology Clinic's Insights

Inner Eastern Psychology dedicates to offering effective treatments to help overcome psychological challenges. We will look at a predominant approach in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), known as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) - a widely known and evidence-based therapy in the Melbourne Psychology industry.

This approach, as highlighted in today’s blog, offers valuable insights into how we can reshape our beliefs about trauma and reclaim a sense of normalcy in our lives.

Understanding Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a type of cognitive-behavioural treatment intended specifically to treat PTSD symptoms. It is based on the idea that PTSD symptoms often stem from conflicting emotions and thoughts related to a traumatic event. To help us cope with our trauma, therapy encourages us to re-examine our thoughts.

Deep Dive into the Methodology of Cognitive Processing Therapy Research

The following  study focused on 15 military veterans who had been diagnosed with PTSD as a result of their service. These people were part of a larger randomised controlled trial, which is the highest standard for investigating treatment efficacy because it eliminates bias and assures the results are reliable. The selected veterans provided a large sample that reflects frequent PTSD experiences among people with military history.

Participants attended 12 sessions of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), a structured therapy that aims to reframe unhelpful beliefs they hold about their traumatic experiences. The therapy was conducted by trained clinicians, ensuring consistency and adherence to the therapeutic framework.

The use of "impact statements" was a novel and important aspect of this research. Participants were asked to write extensive narratives about their trauma and its impact on their views about themselves, others, and the world at the start of the therapy (after session 1) and near the end (after session 11). These impact statements are important because they provide insight into the participants' internal experiences and cognitive changes as they progress through the therapy.

Key Findings from the Study

1. Increased Personal Safety and Trust: Initially, many participants felt insecure and distrusted others. Throughout therapy, there was a visible shift towards feeling safer and being able to trust people and oneself. This alteration is significant since it has a direct impact on the individual's social relationships and sense of security.

2. Regained Power and Control: One recurring topic among the participants was a sense of powerlessness caused by their experience. CPT assisted them in regaining control of their lives, shifting away from the urge to overcontrol situations, which is a common coping technique in PTSD clients.

3. Enhanced Self-Esteem and Intimacy: The therapy significantly increased participants' self-esteem. They shifted from self-blame and negative self-perceptions to recognizing their worth and actions in the midst of those traumatic experiences. This change was also reflected in their relationships, which showed an increase in intimacy and closeness.

4. Reduction in PTSD Symptoms: At the conclusion of the therapy, PTSD symptoms such as hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts, and emotional numbness were significantly decreased. Participants reported fewer symptoms and improved management of those that persisted.

Implications for Therapy

These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of CPT in addressing the underlying cognitive distortions associated with PTSD. CPT improves general mental health and functioning by managing and changing these beliefs. It also aligns with our commitment at Inner Eastern Psychology to deliver treatments that not only reduce symptoms, but also empower our clients to live richer, more rewarding lives.
